Why Use Bins in NetSuite
First, work out when you should start using bins. As we get started, one thing to remember is that bins require specific warehouse processes to be followed. If these processes are followed, you will have inventory that is more accurate and faster to pick, as well greater accuracy with order fulfillment.
How Do You Move To Bins
If you are already live on NetSuite and are not using bins, the process of moving to bins is easier than it may seem.
Here are some factors to consider when setting up a bin management system:
- Item Characteristics
- Physical Warehouse Constraints
- Transaction Volume
- Order Mix
Decide how to lay out your warehouse to provide the most efficient picking strategy.
Think about implementing Bin Sequencing to achieve this.
Print bin labels with barcodes. Pro tip: Use magnetic sheets so that you can move or add bins in the future as needed.

Advanced Bins
If you will be stocking lot and/or serial items, then you will be required to use advanced bins. Many customers choose advanced bins simply for the tighter inventory control that is provided – even without lot and serial items. Using a barcoding solution helps decrease the amount of effort required to maintain the bin management system.
Bin Sequencing 101
Bin sequencing is the practice of optimizing your pick paths so that your pickers aren’t relying on memory or zig-zagging across the warehouse. Mobile devices guide workers through the aisles along the most efficient pick route.

Best Practices
- The best way to establish your bin sequence is to imagine that you need to pick from every bin in the warehouse to fulfill an order. How would you travel through your warehouse to pick?
- If you’re moving to a new building or re-labeling your warehouse, we recommend following the Uniform Bin Labeling Configuration pictured above, using Pick Sequencing to direct the pick.
- Only adding a few bins? Use the gaps in sequence number to establish the pick sequence for that bin.
- If you are making significant changes, utilize a CSV import/export for convenience.
Customer Experience
"We were running out of inventory several times a week previously. Now, it’s rare. I trust RF-SMART bin replenishment to eliminate stock outs."

Next Steps:
Always ensure that your location and bin quantities in NetSuite match.
Monitor and resolve any negative inventory; Bin Transfer the negative quantity of an item into the bin to bring on-hand quantity back to 0.
Resolve any items that are committed to invalid open orders by deleting the fulfilment/bin transfer to picked bin, then closing out the original sales order.
If you’re using Stock Counts, ensure all of your inventory has the “Next Count Date” or “Count Interval” fields in NetSuite populated. Use a CSV import to perform a mass update.
