Henny Penny is a global manufacturer and distributor of foodservice solutions. As a growing, global company, Henny Penny sought to replace their previous data collection solution with RF-SMART to achieve three main business goals.
Who is Henny Penny? It might not be a household name, but it’s almost certain you’ve benefitted from their products. Founded in 1957, Henny Penny built and marketed the world’s first commercial pressure fryer. This family-owned company has since expanded their product line to include a variety of foodservice solutions, such as rotisseries, blast chillers, warming cabinets, and more. Headquartered in Eaton, Ohio, Henny Penny also services their global customers from corporate locations in France, Russia and China.
Henny Penny’s success in the industry of foodservice solutions can, in part, be attributed to their understanding that productivity means profits. Productivity and quality are major parts of what Henny Penny provides to their customers. As a growing company, Henny Penny found the need for increased productivity in their manufacturing and distribution operations.
Out with the Old and In with the New
Henny Penny has been a JDE user since 1994, but they upgraded to EnterpriseOne 9.1 in 2012. Before their upgrade, Henny Penny had been using a competitive automated data collection (ADC) solution to RF-SMART. However, a lack of customer service, compliancy with EnterpriseOne 9.1 and a highly technical approach led Henny Penny to research other options.
Henny Penny knew of RF-SMART and began researching and interacting with the RF-SMART team. According to Bob Blackburn, project manager at Henny Penny, the customer service they experienced from the sales cycle, all the way through implementation of RF-SMART, was entirely different than with their previous solution. “Often, technology is looked at first, but I’ve found it to be more succesful to look at people and processes first and then apply technology,” Bob said. “RF-SMART took a business approach to implementation with functional analysts leading us through business process changes and then applying technology.”
RF-SMART took the time to learn their business, walking through their processes in the warehouse on the first day, and helped Henny Penny understand how to accomplish their goals without being overly technical. “We decided to move forward with RF-SMART to completely replace our previous ADC vendor,” Bob said.
Additionally, Henny Penny chose RF-SMART due to its highly configurable software and reliable integration with JD Edwards. Henny Penny was pleased to learn they could make adjustments to RF-SMART without having to bring in a developer. Small, cosmetic changes were made to the RF-SMART user view so the shop floor employees would see only what they needed. “Our users are not necessarily technical, so the fact that they could just read the prompt made it very simple,” Bob said. “It was also a plus that RF-SMART works much like JD Edwards, so the learning curve was not so steep.”
Business Goals Achieved
Although customer service and ease of training are great qualities, no barcoding solution is worth the investment if it does not assist you in reaching your business goals. Henny Penny had three very specific goals, and RF-SMART enabled them to accomplish each one immediately following implementation:
1. Automate manual processes: Even with their previous ADC solution, Henny Penny’s processes from inventory through ship confirms were all manual, which created significant back-up in completing the picking and transportation process. With RF-SMART, these processes are now automated, allowing the responsibility to be distributed among multiple employees and eliminating the issue of bottle-necking. And by spreading the work out to multiple employes, Henny Penny is able to improve their scalability as they grow.
2. Improve data accuracy: Manual processes also lead to a greater risk of data inaccuracies. Many of Henny Penny’s serial numbers are visually very similar, and with RF-SMART, Henny Penny employees are notified immediately if the incorrect unit has been selected for a specific sales order. In fact, on the first day using their new automated data collection solution, RF-SMART caught an incorrect pick. “On the first thing we were trying to ship, the system stopped us and notified us of an incorrect pick,” Bob said. RF-SMART’s functionality allows any inventory error to be quickly rectified and avoids the useless waste of time and money. Additionally, customer satisfaction is boosted when they receive the correct product on time and the first time.
3. Achieve real-time visibility: Real-time visibility is also a key element of Henny Penny’s business. They are often required to complete inventory on the same day that it ships out. With numerous sales orders and shipments daily, Henny Penny needs to know the current status of each unit to meet their operational goals. With RF-SMART, each step of the shop floor and shipping processes triggers an inventory status, which allows Henny Penny to continue to work proactively throughout the day
Not only did RF-SMART help Henny Penny achieve these primary goals, but it also saved them money in the process! Speedier transactions along with the spread of the picking and transportation process from one employee to four, has allowed Henny Penny to grow their business without growing their warehouse workforce. “With the rate that our business continues to grow, without RF-SMART, we would have had to add headcount to the shipping office.”
